3 Bedroom decoration project at Lake Farm, Alderholt, Dorset

I had decided in the summer of 2025 that I wanted to become a professional painter and decorator.

I was fortunate enough to know someone who looks after fishing lodges locally who became my client.

The lodges were closed over the winter months and this was a great opportunity for me to experience life as a professional painter and decorator- albeit a part time one as I was fitting it around my full time Monday- Friday job as a receptionist.

The client wanted one 3 bedroom lodge (Kingfisher) totally redecorated except for the bathroom and also two other lodges freshened up with a sugar soap and repaint.

Kingfisher needed a good bit of preparation ready for the paint, a scrub, scraping of the flaky paint, filling and lots of caulking. Luckily I absolutely love the preparation- it’s a very mindful process for me.

The client wanted the lounge to have a couple of feature walls in blue, one bedroom to have a pink feature wall and another to have a rich, chocolatey brown wall. This was definately a test of my cutting in skills. I was glad to have bought myself a new angled brush ready for the job. The rest of the lodge had a couple of coats of white emulsion to give it a really good refresh.

I really enjoyed the transformation of colour and it was satisfying to see all the extensive preparation around the wall and ceiling edges, windows, skirting boards and doorframes really paid off as the client was really pleased and I was very proud of the finish I achieved.

Following that project I received this testimonial from them at Lake Farm Country and Fishing Holidays:

“Home Works decorated several of our holiday lets, and we were extremely impressed with both the quality of the work and Davina’s professionalism. We’ve even had other decorators stay at the properties, and they’ve commented on the high standard of the finish.”

I think part of what made this job so enjoyable for me was the location, only half an hour from Bournemouth but it was so peaceful and full of nature that even after a full day’s work I felt like I’d been on holiday.
